Optimizing Network Stability with SD-WAN and Cloud Routers

Jul 15, 2024 | Cloud Hosting, Networking

In today’s digital age, businesses rely heavily on stable Internet connections to maintain productivity and ensure seamless operations. However, not all internet service providers (ISPs) can guarantee the reliability needed, leading to frequent disruptions and downtime. One of our clients faced this exact challenge. Fortunately, with the implementation of Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) technology and cloud routers, Bonilla.Tech was able to transform their network stability and performance.

The Challenge: Unstable ISP Links

Our mid-sized enterprise client was experiencing constant network interruptions due to unreliable ISP links. This instability hampered their day-to-day operations and affected their ability to provide timely services to their customers. The need for a robust solution to mitigate these issues and ensure a stable and reliable network connection became paramount.

The Solution: SD-WAN Configuration with Cloud Router Tunnels

SD-WAN Technology

SD-WAN is a game-changer for businesses facing network reliability issues. It simplifies the management and operation of a WAN by decoupling the networking hardware from its control mechanism. This technology enables businesses to dynamically route traffic across multiple ISP links, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.

Cloud Router Integration

To further enhance the stability, we integrated SD-WAN with cloud routers. Cloud routers act as virtual gateways, enabling secure and scalable network connections across the internet. By setting up tunnels to these cloud routers, we created redundant pathways for data traffic, ensuring that even if one ISP link failed, the network would automatically reroute the traffic through an alternative path.

The Implementation Process

  1. Assessment and Planning: We began with a comprehensive assessment of the client’s existing network infrastructure and their specific requirements. This included identifying the critical applications that required high availability and analyzing the performance of their current ISP links.
  2. SD-WAN Deployment: Next, we deployed the SD-WAN solution. This involved configuring the SD-WAN edge devices to manage and monitor the multiple ISP links. The devices were set up to dynamically route traffic based on real-time performance metrics, such as latency, jitter, and packet loss.
  3. Cloud Router Tunnels:  We then established secure tunnels to cloud routers. These tunnels provided additional redundancy and ensured seamless failover capabilities. In the event of an ISP link failure, the SD-WAN solution would automatically switch the traffic to an alternative link via the cloud router tunnels, maintaining uninterrupted connectivity.
  4. Testing and Optimization: After the initial setup, we conducted rigorous testing to ensure that the solution was working as intended. This involved simulating various failure scenarios and fine-tuning the configuration to achieve optimal performance.

The Results

The implementation of SD-WAN with cloud router tunnels significantly improved the client’s network stability and performance. Key benefits included:

  • Enhanced Reliability: The dynamic routing capabilities of SD-WAN, combined with the redundancy provided by cloud router tunnels, ensured consistent and reliable network connectivity.
  • Improved Performance: The solution optimized the use of available ISP links, reducing latency and improving the overall user experience.
  • Cost Efficiency: By leveraging multiple ISP links and using cloud routers, the client was able to achieve high availability without the need for expensive dedicated circuits.
